Ica

text

Famous for its desert landscape, production of Pisco and the biggest sand dunes, the city of Ica lies about 300 kilometers south of the capital city of Lima.

Ica lies within a wide expanse of high plains that border the Andean foothills to the east. A town (originally called Valverde) established nearby in 1563 was moved to the present site of Ica after being destroyed by an earthquake in 1569. It was officially renamed San Jerónimo de Ica in 1640.

The region has long been known for the cultivation and processing of cotton and grapes.

In 2007, an 8.0 earthquake rocked Ica and many surrounding smaller cities which in effect left a humanitarian aid crisis. Many of which already had At-Risk populations living among them. It was inevitable, that Coprodeli begin intervening in the Ica region. In addition to having prior experiences in providing aid, we brought along a new concept to Ica, “low-cost housing”.

Considering the majority of people in this region live on land they squatted on to get. A land with no basic city services such as running water, power or indoor plumbing to new a few off the bat. Coprodeli’s solution to face this; habitat, and this is how Coprodeli Habitat program came into existence.
